Thermodynamic characterisations or analogies have proved to provide powerful tools for the statistical analysis of network populations or time series, together with the identification of structural anomalies that occur within them. For instance, classical Boltzmann statistics together with the corresponding partition function have been used to apply the tools of statistical physics to the analysis of variations in network structure. However, the physical analogy adopted in this analysis, together with the interpretation of the resulting system of particles is sometimes vague and remains an open question. This, in turn, has implications concerning the definition of quantities such as temperature and energy. In this paper, we take a novel view of the thermal characterisation where we regard the edges in a network as the particles of the thermal system. By considering networks with a fixed number of nodes we obtain a conservation law which applies to the particle occupation configuration. Using this interpretation, we provide a physical meaning for the temperature which is related to the number of network nodes and edges. This provides a fundamental description of a network as a thermal system. If we further interpret the elements of the adjacency matrix as the binary microstates associated with edges, this allows us to further extend the analysis to systems with edge-weights. We thus introduce the concept of the canonical ensemble into the thermal network description and the corresponding partition function and then use this to compute the thermodynamic quantities. Finally, we provide numerical experiments on synthetic and real-world data-sets to evaluate the thermal characterisations for both unweighted and weighted networks.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review.

CTC and Attn are the two most popular methods incorporated with CNNs, RNNs or some other basic deep learning components. Attn based approaches are more accurate in most scenarios while CTC based ones achieve better efficiency and are easier to train. However, some drawbacks still exist in these two mainstream methods respectively. In this paper, to deal with the problems mentioned above, a Recified Attentional Double Supervised network named ReADS is proposed.

ReADS: A Rectified Attentional Double Supervised Network for Scene Text Recognition

Recent studies have shown remarkable success in face image generations. However, most of the existing methods only generate face images from random noise, and cannot generate face images according to the specific attributes. In this paper, we focus on the problem of face synthesis from attributes, which aims at generating faces with specific characteristics corresponding to the given attributes. To this end, we propose a novel attributes aware face image generator method with generative adversarial networks called AFGAN. Specifically, we firstly propose a two-path embedding layer and self-attention mechanism to convert binary attribute vector to rich attribute features. Then three stacked generators generate 64*64, 128*128 and 256*256 resolution face images respectively by taking the attribute features as input. In addition, an image-attribute matching loss is proposed to enhance the correlation between the generated images and input attributes. Extensive experiments on CelebA demonstrate the superiority of our AFGAN in terms of both qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

Attributes Aware Face Generation with Generative Adversarial Networks

Deep feedforward convolutional neural networks (CNNs) perform well in the saliency prediction of omnidirectional images (ODIs), and have become the leading class of candidate models of the visual processing mechanism in the primate ventral stream. These CNNs have evolved from shallow network architecture to extremely deep and branching architecture to achieve superb performance in various vision tasks, yet it is unclear how brain-like they are. In particular, these deep feedforward CNNs are difficult to mapping to ventral stream structure of the brain visual system due to their vast number of layers and missing biologically-important connections, such as recurrence. To tackle this issue, some brain-like shallow neural networks are introduced. In this paper, we propose a novel brain-like network model for saliency prediction of head fixations on ODIs. Specifically, our proposed model consists of three modules: a CORnet-S module, a template feature extraction module and a ranking attention module (RAM). The CORnetS module is a lightweight artificial neural network (ANN) with four anatomically mapped areas (V1, V2, V4 and IT) and it can simulate the visual processing mechanism of ventral visual stream in the human brain. The template features extraction module is introduced to extract attention maps of ODIs and provide guidance for the feature ranking in the following RAM module. The RAM module is used to rank and select features that are important for fine-grained saliency prediction. Extensive experiments have validated the effectiveness of the proposed model in predicting saliency maps of ODIs.

Saliency Prediction on Omnidirectional Images with Brain-Like Shallow Neural Network


In this paper, we propose a graph-based feature aggregation network (G-FAN) for video face recognition. 
Compared with the still image, video face recognition exhibits great challenges due to huge intra-class variability and high inter-class ambiguity. 
To address this problem, our G-FAN first uses a Convolutional Neural Network to extract deep features for every input face of a subject. Then, we build an affinity graph based on the relationship between facial features and apply Graph Convolutional Network to generate fine-grained quality vectors for each frame. Finally, the features among multiple frames are adaptively aggregated into a discriminative vector to represent a video face. Different from previous works that take a single image as input, our G-FAN could utilize the correlation information between image pairs and aggregate a template of face images simultaneously. The experiments on video face recognition benchmarks, including YTF, IJB-A, and \IJB-C show that: i) G-FAN automatically learns to advocate high-quality frames while repelling low-quality ones. ii) G-FAN significantly boosts recognition accuracy and outperforms other state-of-the-art aggregation methods.

G-FAN: Graph-Based Feature Aggregation Network \\for Video Face Recognition

With abundant labeled data, deep convolutional neural networks have shown great success in various image recognition tasks. However, these models are often less powerful when applied to novel datasets due to a phenomenon known as domain shift. Unsupervised domain adaptation methods aim to address this problem, allowing deep models trained on the labeled source domain to be used on a different target domain (without labels). In this presentation, we investigate whether the generalization ability of an unsupervised domain adaptation method can be improved through multi-task learning, with learned features required to be both domain invariant and discriminative for multiple different but relevant tasks. Experiments evaluating two fundamental recognition tasks---image recognition and segmentation---show that the generalization ability empowered by multi-task learning may not benefit recognition when the model is directly applied on the target domain, but the multi-task learning setting can boost the performance of state-of-the-art unsupervised domain adaptation methods by a non-negligible margin.

Unsupervised Multi-Task Domain Adaptation

The diversity of multimedia data in the real-world usually forms multi-view features. How to explore the structure information and correlations among multi-view features is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-view
subspace learning method, named embedding shared low-rank and feature correlation (ESLRFC), for multi-view data analysis. First, in the embedding subspace, we propose a robust low-rank model on each feature set and enforce a shared low-rank constraint to characterize the common structure information of multiple feature data. Second, we develop an enhanced correlation analysis in the embedding subspace for simultaneously removing the redundancy of each feature set and exploring the correlations of multiple feature data. Finally, we incorporate the low-rank model and the correlation analysis into a unified framework. The shared low-rank constraint not only depicts the data distribution consistency among multiple feature data, but also assists robust subspace learning. Experimental results on recognition tasks demonstrate the superior performance and noise robustness of the proposed method.

Embedding shared low-rank and feature correlation for multi-view data analysis


In this paper, we apply ensemble methods from statistical physics to analyse fMRI brain networks for Alzheimer's patients. By mapping the nodes in a network to virtual particles in a thermal system, the microcanonical ensemble and the canonical ensemble are analogous to two different fMRI network representations. These representations are obtained by selecting a threshold on the BOLD time series correlations between nodes in different ways. The microcanonical ensemble corresponds to a set of networks with a fixed fraction of edges, while the canonical ensemble corresponds to the set networks with edges obtained with a fixed value of the threshold. In the former case, there is zero variance in the number of edges in each network, while in the latter case the set of networks have a variance in the number of edges. Ensemble methods describe the macroscopic properties of a network by considering the underlying microscopic characterisations which are in turn closely related to the degree configuration and network entropy. Our treatment allows us to specify new partition functions for fMRI brain networks, and to explore a phase transition in the degree distribution. The resulting method turns out to be an effective tool to identify the most salient anatomical brain regions in Alzheimer's disease and provides a tool to distinguish groups of patients in different stages of the disease.

fMRI Brain Networks as Statistical Mechanical Ensembles

This paper presents a novel method based on the generative adversarial network for radial distortion correction. Instead of generating a corrected image, our generator predicts a pixel flow map to measure the pixel offset between the distorted and corrected image. The quality of the generated pixel flow map and the warped image are judged by the discriminator. As texture far away from the image center has strong distortion, we develop an Adaptive Inverted Foveal layer which can transform the deformation to the intensity of the image to exploit this property. Rotation symmetry enhanced convolution kernels are applied to extract geometric features of different orientations explicitly. These learned features are recalibrated using the Squeeze-and-Excitation block to assign different weights for different directions. Moreover, we construct a first real-world radial distorted image dataset RD600 annotated with ground truth to evaluate our proposed method. We conduct extensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of each part of our framework. The further experiment shows our approach outperforms previous methods in both synthetic and real-world datasets quantitatively and qualitatively.

Position-aware and Symmetry Enhanced GAN for Radial Distortion Correction


A text instance can be easily detected as multiple ones due to the large space between texts/characters, curved shape and partial occlusion. In this paper, a feature embedding based text instance grouping algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. To learn the feature space, a TIEM (Text Instance Embedding Module) is trained to minimize the within instance scatter and maximize the between instance scatter. Similarity between different text instances are measured in the feature space and merged if they meet certain conditions. Experimental results show that our approach can effectively connect text regions that belong to the same text instance. Competitive performance of our approach has been achieved on CTW1500, Total-Text, IC15 and a subset consists of texts selected from the three datasets, with large spacing and occlusions.

Feature Embedding Based Text Instance Grouping for Largely Spaced and Occluded Text Detection

In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based network for stereo matching called DF-Net, which makes three main contributions that are experimentally shown to have practical merit. Firstly, we further increase the accuracy by using the deeply fused spatial pyramid pooling (DF-SPP) module, which can acquire the continuous multi-scale context information in both parallel and cascade manners. Secondly, we introduce channel attention block to dynamically boost the informative features. Finally, we propose a stacked encoder-decoder structure with 3D attention gate for cost regularization. More precisely, the module fuses the coding features to their next encoder-decoder structure under the supervision of attention gate with long-range skip connection, and thus exploit deep and hierarchical context information for disparity prediction. The performance on SceneFlow and KITTI datasets shows that our model is able to generate better results against several state-of-the-art algorithms.
