Facial Action Units (AUs) are of great significance in communication. Automatic AU detection can improve the understanding of psychological condition and emotional status. Recently, a number of deep learning methods have been proposed to take charge with problems in automatic AU detection.
Several challenges, like unbalanced labels and ignorance of local information, remain to be addressed. In this paper, we propose a fast and light neural network called MRP-Net, which is an end-to-end trainable method for facial AU detection to solve these problems. First, we design a Multiple Region Perception (MRP) module aimed at capturing different locations and sizes of features in the deeper level of the network without facial landmark points. Then, in order to balance the positive and negative samples in the large dataset, a batch balanced method adjusting the weight of every sample in one batch in our loss function is suggested. Experimental results on two popular AU datasets, BP4D and DISFA prove that MRP-Net outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Compared with the best method, not only does MRP-Net have an average F1 score improvement of
2.95% on BP4D and 5.43% on DISFA, and it also decreases the number of network parameters by 54.62% and the number of network FLOPs by 19.6%.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks:

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently achieved great success for single image super-resolution (SISR) task due to their powerful feature representation capabilities. The most recent deep learning based SISR methods focus on designing deeper / wider models to learn the non-linear mapping between low-resolution (LR) inputs and high-resolution (HR) outputs. These existing SR methods do not take into account the image observation (physical) model and thus require a large number of network's trainable parameters with a great volume of training data. To address these issues, we propose a deep Iterative Super-Resolution Residual Convolutional Network (ISRResCNet) that exploits the powerful image regularization and large-scale optimization techniques by training the deep network in an iterative manner with a residual learning approach. Extensive experimental results on various super-resolution benchmarks demonstrate that our method with a few trainable parameters improves the results for different scaling factors in comparison with the state-of-art methods.

Deep Iterative Residual Convolutional Network for Single Image Super-Resolution

Generalized zero-shot learning (GZSL) tackles the problem of learning to classify instances involving both seen classes and unseen ones. The key issue is how to effectively transfer the model learned from seen classes to unseen classes. Existing works in GZSL usually assume that some prior information about unseen classes are available. However, such an assumption is unrealistic when new unseen classes appear dynamically. To this end, we propose a novel heterogeneous graph-based knowledge transfer method (HGKT) for GZSL, agnostic to unseen classes and instances, by leveraging graph neural network. Specifically, a structured heterogeneous graph is constructed with high-level representative nodes for seen classes, which are chosen through Wasserstein barycenter in order to simultaneously capture inter-class and intra-class relationship. The aggregation and embedding functions can be learned through graph neural network, which can be used to compute the embeddings of unseen classes by transferring the knowledge from their neighbors. Extensive experiments on public benchmark datasets show that our method achieves state-of-the-art results.

Heterogeneous Graph-based Knowledge Transfer for Generalized Zero-shot Learning

Vehicle scale estimation with a single camera is a typical application for intelligent transportation and it faces the challenges from visual computing while intensity-based method and descriptor-based method should be balanced. This paper proposed a vehicle scale estimation method based on salient object detection to resolve this problem. The regularized intensity matching method is proposed in Lie Algebra to achieve robust and accurate scale estimation, and descriptor matching and intensity matching are combined to minimize the proposed loss function. The visual attention mechanism is designed to select image patches with texture and remove the occluded image patches. Then the weights are assigned to pixels from the selected image patches which alleviates the influence of noise-corrupted pixels. The experiments show that the proposed method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods with regard to the robustness and accuracy of vehicle scale estimation.

Visual Saliency Oriented V ehicle Scale Estimation

We present a bottom-up approach to hierarchical classification based on posteriors conditioned with logits. Beginning with the output logits for a set of terminal labels from a base classifier, an initial hypothesis is repeatedly generalized (softened) to a weaker label until a particular confidence measure is achieved. As conditioning the probabilistic model with the full set of terminal logits quickly becomes intractable for large label sets, we propose an alternative approach employing “generalized logits” spanning relevant hypotheses within the label hierarchy. Experimental results are compared with related methods on multiple datasets and base classifiers. The proposed approach provides an efficient and effective hierarchical classification framework with monotonic, non-decreasing inference behavior.

Hierarchical Classification with Confidence using Generalized Logits

Learning deep neural network (DNN) classifier with noisy labels is a challenging task because the DNN can easily over- fit on these noisy labels due to its high capability. In this paper, we present a very simple but effective training paradigm called P-DIFF, which can train DNN classifiers but obviously alleviate the adverse impact of noisy labels. Our proposed probability difference distribution implicitly reflects the probability of a training sample to be clean, then this probability is employed to re-weight the corresponding sample during the training process. P-DIFF can also achieve good performance even without prior knowledge on the noise rate of training samples. Experiments on benchmark datasets also demonstrate that P-DIFF is superior to the state-of-the-art sample selection methods.


P-DIFF: Learning Classifier with Noisy Labels based on Probability Difference Distributions


The single-image super-resolution (SISR) aims to recover a potential high-resolution image from its low-resolution version. Recently, deep learning-based methods have played a significant role in super-resolution field due to its effectiveness and efficiency. However, most of the SISR methods neglect the importance among the feature map channels. Moreover, they can not eliminate the redundant noises, making the output image be blurred. In this paper, we propose the residual subtraction and attention network (RSAN) for powerful feature expression and channels importance learning. More specifically, RSAN firstly implements one redundance removal module to learn noise information in the feature map and subtract noise through residual learning. Then it introduces the channel attention module to amplify high-frequency information and suppress the weight of effectless channels. Experimental results on extensive public benchmarks demonstrate our RSAN achieves significant improvement over the previous SISR methods in terms of both quantitative metrics and visual quality.

RSAN: Residual Subtraction and Attention Network for Single Image Super-Resolution

Lip-reading methods and fusion strategy are crucial for audio-visual speech recognition. In recent years, most approaches involve two separate audio and visual streams with early or late fusion strategies. Such a single-stage fusion method may fail to guarantee the integrity and representativeness of fusion information simultaneously. This paper extends a traditional single-stage fusion network to a two-step feature fusion network by adding an audio-visual early feature fusion (AVEFF) stream to the baseline model. This method can learn the fusion information of different stages, preserving the original features as much as possible and ensuring the independence of different features. Besides, to capture long-range dependencies of video information, a non-local block is added to the feature extraction part of the visual stream (NL-Visual) to obtain the long-term spatio-temporal features. Experimental results on the two largest public datasets in English (LRW) and Mandarin (LRW-1000) demonstrate our method is superior to other state-of-the-art methods.

Audio-Visual Speech Recognition Using A Two-Step Feature Fusion Strategy

Person re-identification (ReID) aims to identify the specific pedestrian in a series of images or videos. Recently, ReID is receiving more and more attention in the fields of computer vision research and application like intelligent security. One major issue downgrading the ReID model performance lies in that various subjects in the same body orientations look too similar to distinguish by the model, while the same subject viewed in different orientations looks rather different. However, most of the current studies do not particularly differentiate pedestrians in orientation when designing the network, so we rethink this problem particularly from the perspective of person orientation and propose a new network structure by including two branches: one handling samples with the same body orientations and the other handling samples with different body orientations. Correspondingly, we also propose an orientation classifier that can accurately distinguish the orientation of each person. At the same time, the three-part loss functions are introduced for orientation constraint and combined to optimize the network simultaneously. Also, we use global and local features int the training stage in order to make use of multi-level information. Therefore, our network can derive its efficacy from orientation constraints and multiple features. Experiments show that our method not only has competitive performance on multiple datasets, but also can let retrieval results aligned with the orientation of the query sample rank higher, which may have great potential in the practical applications.

Rethinking ReID：Multi-Feature Fusion Person Re-identification Based On Orientation Constraints

Semantic segmentation is an essential task in plenty of real-life applications such as virtual reality, video analysis, autonomous driving, etc. Recent advancements in fundamental vision-based tasks ranging from image classiﬁcation to semantic segmentation have demonstrated deep learning-based models’ high capability in learning complicated representation on large datasets. Nevertheless, manually labeling semantic segmentation dataset with pixel-level annotation is extremely labor-intensive. To address this problem, we propose a novel multi-level feature alignment framework for cross-domain semantic segmentation of urban scenes by exploiting generative adversarial networks. In the proposed multi-level feature alignment method, we ﬁrst translate images from one domain to another one. Then the discriminative feature representations extracted by the deep neural network are concatenated, followed by domain adversarial learning to make the intermediate feature distribution of the target domain images close to those in the source domain. With these domain adaptation techniques, models trained with images in the source domain where the labels are easy to acquire can be deployed to the target domain where the labels are scarce. Experimental evaluations on various mainstream benchmarks conﬁrm the effectiveness as well as robustness of our approach.

Cross-Domain Semantic Segmentation of Urban Scenes via Multi-Level Feature Alignment


Automatic medical image segmentation has wide applications for disease diagnosing. However, it is much more challenging than natural optical image segmentation due to the high-resolution of medical images and the corresponding huge computation cost. The sliding window is a commonly used technique for whole slide image (WSI) segmentation, however, for these methods based on the sliding window, the main drawback is lacking global contextual information for supervision. In this paper, we propose a dual-inputs attention network (denoted as DA-RefineNet) for WSI segmentation, where both local fine-grained information and global coarse information can be efficiently utilized. Sufficient comparative experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the results prove that the proposed method can achieve better performance on WSI segmentation compared to methods relying on single-input.
