We address the problem of unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) which aims at adapting models trained on a labeled domain to a completely unlabeled domain. One way to achieve this goal is to learn a domain-invariant representation. However, this approach is subject to two challenges: samples from two domains are insufficient to guarantee domain-invariance at most part of the latent space, and neighboring samples from the target domain may not belong to the same class on the low-dimensional manifold. To mitigate these shortcomings, we propose two strategies. First, we incorporate a domain mixup strategy in domain adversarial learning model by linearly interpolating between the source and target domain samples. This allows the latent space to be continuous and yields an improvement of the domain matching. Second, the domain discriminator is regularized via judging the relative difference between both domains for the input mixup features, which speeds up the domain matching. Experiment results show that our proposed model achieves superior performance on different tasks under various domain shifts and data complexity.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review.

We propose two modified neural networks based on dual path multi-scale fusion networks (SFANet) and SegNet for accurate and efficient crowd counting. Inspired by SFANet, the first model, which is named M-SFANet, is attached with atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) and context-aware module (CAN). The encoder of M-SFANet is enhanced with ASPP containing parallel atrous convolutional layers with different sampling rates and hence able to extract multi-scale features of the target object and incorporate larger context. To further deal with scale variation throughout an input image, we leverage the CAN module which adaptively encodes the scales of the contextual information. The combination yields an effective model for counting in both dense and sparse crowd scenes. Based on the SFANet decoder structure, M-SFANet's decoder has dual paths, for density map and attention map generation. The second model is called M-SegNet, which is produced by replacing the bilinear upsampling in SFANet with max unpooling that is used in SegNet. This change provides a faster model while providing competitive counting performance. Designed for high-speed surveillance applications, M-SegNet has no additional multi-scale-aware module in order to not increase the complexity. Both models are encoder-decoder based architectures and are end-to-end trainable. We conduct extensive experiments on five crowd counting datasets and one vehicle counting dataset to show that these modifications yield algorithms that could improve state-of-the-art crowd counting methods. Encoder-Decoder Based Convolutional Neural Networks with Multi-Scale-Aware Modules for Crowd Counting


Due to the limits of bandwidth and storage space, digital images are usually down-scaled and compressed when transmitted over networks, resulting in loss of details and jarring artifacts that can lower the performance of high-level visual tasks. In this paper, we aim to generate an artifact-free high-resolution image from a low-resolution one compressed with an arbitrary quality factor by exploring joint compression artifacts reduction (CAR) and super-resolution (SR) tasks. First, we propose a context-aware joint CAR and SR neural network (CAJNN) that integrates both local and non-local features to solve CAR and SR in one-stage. Finally, a deep reconstruction network is adopted to predict high quality and high-resolution images. Evaluation on CAR and SR benchmark datasets shows that our CAJNN model outperforms previous methods and also takes 26.2% shorter runtime. Based on this model, we explore addressing two critical challenges in high-level computer vision: optical character recognition of low-resolution texts, and extremely tiny face detection. We demonstrate that CAJNN can serve as an effective image preprocessing method and improve the accuracy for real-scene text recognition (from 85.30% to 85.75%) and the average precision for tiny face detection (from 0.317 to 0.611).

Boosting High-level Vision With Joint Compression Artifacts Reduction And Super-resolution


While potteries are common artifacts excavated in archaeological sites, the restoration process relies on manual cleaning and reassembly of shattered pieces. Since the number of possible 3D configurations is considerably large, the exhaustive manual trial may result in abrasion on fractured surfaces and even failure to find the correct matches. As a result, many recent works suggest virtual reassembly from 3D scans of the fragments. The problem is challenging in the view of the conventional 3D geometric analysis, as it is hard to extract reliable shape features from the thin break lines. We propose to optimize for the global configuration by combining geometric constraints with information from noisy shape features. Specifically, we enforce bijection and continuity of sequence of correspondences given estimates of corners and pair-wise matching scores between multiple break lines. We demonstrate that our pipeline greatly increases the accuracy of correspondences, resulting in stable restoration of 3D configurations from irregular and noisy evidence.


3D Pots Configuration System by Optimizing over Geometric Constraints


This paper addresses the problem of manipulating a face image in terms of changing its pose. To achieve this, we propose a new method that can be trained under the very general “unpaired” setting. To this end, we firstly propose to model the general appearance, layout and background of the input image using a low-resolution version of it which is progressively passed through a hallucination network to generate features at higher resolutions. We show that such a formulation is significantly simpler than previous approaches for appearance modelling based on autoencoders. Secondly, we propose a fully learnable and spatially-aware appearance transfer module which can cope with misalignment between the input source image and the target pose and can effectively combine the features from the hallucination network with the features produced by our generator. Thirdly, we introduce an identity preserving method that is trained in an unsupervised way, by using an auxiliary feature extractor and a contrastive loss between the real and generated images. We compare our method against the state-of-the-art reporting significant improvements both quantitatively, in terms of FID and IS, and qualitatively.

Unsupervised Face Manipulation Via Hallucination


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Classifier Pool Generation based on a Two-level Diversity Approach


The primitive basis of image based material recognition builds upon the fact that discrepancies in the reflectances of distinct materials lead to imaging differences under multiple viewpoints. LF cameras possess coherent abilities to capture multiple sub-aperture views (SAIs) within one exposure, which can provide appropriate multi-view sources for material recognition. In this paper, a unified ``Factorize-Connect-Merge`` (FCM) deep-learning pipeline is proposed to solve problems of light field image based material recognition. 4D light-field data as input is initially decomposed into consecutive 3D light-field slices. Shallow CNN is leveraged to extract low-level visual features of each view inside these slices. As to establish correspondences between these SAIs, Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) network is built upon these low-level features to model the imaging differences. After feature selection including concatenation and dimension reduction, effective and robust feature representations for material recognition can be extracted from 4D light-field data. Experimental results indicate that the proposed pipeline can obtain remarkable performances on both tasks of single-pixel material classification and whole-image material segmentation. In addition, the proposed pipeline can potentially benefit and inspire other researchers who may also take LF images as input and need to extract 4D light-field representations for computer vision tasks such as object classification, semantic segmentation and edge detection.

A Novel Deep-learning Pipeline for Light Field Image Based Material Recognition

The design of an automatic visual inspection system is usually performed in two stages. While the first stage consists of selecting the most suitable hardware setup for highlighting most effectively the defects on the surface to be inspected, the second stage concerns the development of algorithmic solutions to exploit the potentials offered by the collected data. In this paper, first, we present a novel illumination setup embedding four illumination configurations to resemble diffused, dark-field, and front lighting techniques. Second, we analyze the contributions brought by deploying the proposed setup in the training phase only, mimicking the scenario in which an already developed visual inspection system cannot be modified on the customer site. Along with an exhaustive set of experiments, in this paper, we demonstrate the suitability of the proposed setup for effective illumination of complex-objects, defined as manufactured items with variable surface characteristics that cannot be determined a priori. Eventually, we provide insights into the importance of multiple light configurations availability during training and their natural boosting effect which, without the need to modify the system design in the evaluation phase, lead to improvements in the overall system performance.

Complex-Object Visual Inspection: Empirical Studies on A Multiple Lighting Solution

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are now widely deployed in a variety of computer vision (CV) systems. These systems typically include an image signal processor (ISP), even though the ISP is traditionally designed to produce images that look appealing to humans. In CV systems, it is not clear what the role of the ISP is, or if it is even required at all for accurate prediction. In this work, we investigate the efficacy of the ISP in CNN classification tasks and outline the system-level trade-offs between prediction accuracy and computational cost. To do so, we build software models of a configurable ISP and an imaging sensor to train CNNs on ImageNet with a range of different ISP settings and functionality. Results on ImageNet show that an ISP improves accuracy by 4.6%-12.2% on MobileNets. Results from ResNets demonstrate these trends also generalize to deeper networks. An ablation study of the various processing stages in a typical ISP reveals that the tone mapper is the most significant stage when operating on high dynamic range (HDR) images, by providing 5.8% average accuracy improvement alone. We also show that the ISP increases the generalization of CNNs across two different image sensors by a significant 17.5%. Overall, the ISP benefits system efficiency because the memory and computational costs of the ISP is minimal compared to the cost of using a larger CNN to achieve the same accuracy.

ISP4ML: The Role of Image Signal Processing in Efficient Deep Learning Vision Systems

Automatic Student Network Search for Knowledge Distillation


Multi-pedestrian tracking in aerial imagery has several applications such as large-scale event monitoring, disaster management, search-and-rescue missions, and as input into predictive crowd dynamic models. Due to the challenges such as the large number and the tiny size of the pedestrians (e.g., 4×4 pixels) with their similar appearances as well as different scales and atmospheric conditions of the images with their extremely low frame rates (e.g., 2 fps), current state-of-the-art algorithms including the deep learning-based ones are unable to perform well. In this paper, we propose AerialMPTNet, a novel approach for multi-pedestrian tracking in geo-referenced aerial imagery by fusing appearance features from a Siamese Neural Network, movement predictions from a Long Short-Term Memory, and pedestrian interconnections from a GraphCNN. In addition, to address the lack of diverse aerial pedestrian tracking datasets, we introduce the Aerial Multi-Pedestrian Tracking (AerialMPT) dataset consisting of 307 frames and 44,740 pedestrians annotated. We believe that AerialMPT is the largest and most diverse dataset to this date and will be released publicly. We evaluate AerialMPTNet on AerialMPT and KIT AIS, and benchmark with several state-of-the-art tracking methods. Results indicate that AerialMPTNet significantly outperforms other methods on accuracy and time-efficiency.
