Although deep neural networks (NNs) have achieved state-of-the-art accuracy in many visual recognition tasks, the growing computational complexity and energy consumption of networks remains an issue, especially for applications on platforms with limited resources and requiring real-time processing. Filter pruning techniques have recently shown promising results for the compression and acceleration of convolutional NNs (CNNs). 
However, these techniques involve numerous steps and complex optimisations because some only prune after training CNNs, while others prune from scratch during training, by integrating sparsity constraints or by modifying the loss function. 
In this paper, we introduce a new Progressive Gradient Pruning (PGP) technique for iterative filter pruning during training. In contrast to previous progressive pruning techniques, 
it relies on a novel filter selection criterion that measures the change in filter weights, uses a new hard and soft pruning strategy, and effectively adapts momentum tensors during the backward propagation pass. Experimental results obtained after training various CNNs on benchmark datasets for image classification, object detection and domain adaptation indicate that our PGP technique can achieve a better trade-off between classification accuracy and network (time and memory) complexity than PSFP and other state-of-the-art filter pruning techniques. **Welcome to ACL-IJCNLP 2021!**

The great event is jointly organized by the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP). 

As in previous years, the program of the conference includes a poster session, tutorials, workshops and demonstrations in addition to the main conference.


We were able to keep the registration fees similar to those charged for the virtual ACL 2020. The one fee allows attendance at the main conference and any/all tutorials and workshops. ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. In addition, 41 Workshops on a range of important current and emerging research topics complete the ICPR 2020 program. 


Given a corpus of documents, we consider the problem of finding latent topics, and introduce a novel Empirical Bayes based framework that allows us to choose the optimal topic modeling algorithm given observed variables in the data. We specifically consider three disparate algorithms - LDA, graph clustering, and non-negative matrix factorization - and provide a standardized framework that compares statistical and generative assumptions each algorithm makes. We then provide a model selection algorithm that quantifies each model based on how well assumptions match the data. We illustrate the efficacy of our approach by applying our framework to different sets of document corpuses and empirically measuring results.

An Empirical Bayes Approach to Topic Modeling

Anticipation of accidents ahead of time in autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles aids in accident avoidance. In order to recognize abnormal events such as traffic accidents in a video sequence, it is important that the network takes into account interactions of objects in a given frame. We propose a novel Feature Aggregation (FA) block that refines each object’s features by computing a weighted sum of the features of all objects in a frame. We use FA block along with Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network to anticipate accidents in the video sequences. We report mean Average Precision (mAP) and Average Time-to-Accident (ATTA) on Street Accident (SA) dataset. Our proposed method achieves the highest score for risk anticipation by predicting accidents 0.32 sec and 0.75 sec earlier compared to the best results with Adaptive Loss and dynamic parameter prediction based methods respectively.

Global Feature Aggregation for Accident Anticipation

We propose a new method to expose fake videos
based on a time series solution. The method is
based on bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-
LSTM) backbone architecture with two different
types of features: Face-Alignment and Dense-Face-
Alignment, in which both of them are physiological
signals that can be distinguished between fake and
original videos. We choose 68 landmark points as
the feature of Face-Alignment and Pose Adaptive
Feature (PAF) for Dense-Face-Alignment. Based
on these two facial features, we designed two deep
networks. In addition, we optimize our network by
adding an attention mechanism that improves de-
tection precision. Our method is tested over bench-
marks of Face Forensics/Face Forensics++ dataset
and show a promising performance on inference
speed while maintaing accuracy with state-of art
solutions that deal against DeepFake.

Detecting Manipulated Facial Videos: A Time Series Solution


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

Task-based Focal Loss for Adversarially Robust Meta-Learning


Recent advances in generalized image understanding have seen a surge in the use of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) across a broad range of image-based detection, classification and prediction tasks. Whilst the reported performance of these approaches is impressive, this study investigates the hitherto unapproached question of the impact of commonplace image and video compression techniques on the performance of such deep learning architectures. Focusing on the JPEG and H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) as a representative proxy for contemporary lossy image/video compression techniques that are in common use within network-connected image/video devices and infrastructure, we examine the impact on performance across five discrete tasks: human pose estimation, semantic segmentation, object detection, action recognition, and monocular depth estimation. As such, within this study we include a variety of network architectures and domains spanning end-toend convolution, encoder-decoder, region-based CNN (R-CNN), dual-stream, and generative adversarial networks (GAN). Our results show a non-linear and non-uniform relationship between network performance and the level of lossy compression applied. Notably, performance decreases significantly below a JPEG quality (quantization) level of 15% and a H.264 Constant Rate Factor (CRF) of 40. However, retraining said architectures on precompressed imagery conversely recovers network performance by up to 78.4% in some cases. Furthermore, there is a correlation between architectures employing an encoder-decoder pipeline and those that demonstrate resilience to lossy image compression. The characteristics of the relationship between input compression to output task performance can be used to inform design decisions within future image/video devices and infrastructure.

On the Impact of Lossy Image and Video Compression on the Performance of Deep Convolutional Neural Network Architectures

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation with Multiple Domain Discriminators and Adaptive Self-Training

In this study we investigate a textural processing method of electroencephalography (EEG) signal as a indicator to estimate the driver’s vigilance in a hypothetical Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system.
The novelty of the solution proposed relies on employing the one-dimensional Local Binary Pattern (1D-LBP) algorithm for feature extraction from pre-processed EEG data. From the resulting feature vector, the classification is done according to three vigilance classes: awake, tired and drowsy. The claim is that the class transitions can be detected by describing the variations of the micro-patterns’ occurrences along the EEG signal. The 1D-LBP is able to describe them by detecting mutual variations
of the signal temporarily ”close” as a short bit-code. Our analysis allows to conclude that the 1D-LBP adoption led to significant performance improvement and capturing the class transitions from the EEG signal is effective, although the overall performance is not yet good enough to develop a BCI for assessing the driver’s vigilance in real environments.


Electroencephalography signal processing based on textural features for monitoring the driver’s state by a Brain-Computer Interface

Deep spectral clustering networks have shown their superiorities due to the integration of feature learning and cluster assignment, and the ability to deal with non-convex clusters. Nevertheless, deep spectral clustering is still an illposed problem. Specifically, the affinity learned by the most remarkable SpectralNet is not guaranteed to be consistent with local invariance and thus hurts the final clustering performance. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of Constrained Spectral Clustering Network (CSCN) by incorporating pairwise constraints and clustering oriented fine-tuning to deal with the ill-posedness. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first constrained deep spectral clustering method. Another advantage of CSCN over existing constrained deep clustering networks is that it propagates pairwise constraints throughout the entire dataset. In addition, we design a clustering oriented loss by selftraining to simultaneously finetune feature representations and perform cluster assignments, which further improve the quality of clustering. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art clustering methods.

Constrained Spectral Clustering Network with Self-Training

This paper focuses on two fundamental graph recognition tasks: node classification and graph classification. Existing methods usually learn the node and graph representations for these two tasks separately, and ignore modeling the relations between the local and global structures. In this paper, we propose a general approach to learn the local and global features collaboratively: (1) in order to characterize the correlation among nodes and communities (a set of nodes), we employ the joint community detection/dynamic routing modules to generate the clustering assignment matrices at first and then utilize these matrices to cluster nodes to capture the global information of graphs (locally relevant graph representations). Inspired by the success of spectral clustering, we minimize the ratiocut loss to help optimize the learned assignment matrices. (2) We maximize the mutual information between local and global representations to help learn the globally relevant node representations. Experimental results on a variety of node and graph classification benchmarks show that our model can achieve superior performance over the state-of-the-art approaches.

A General Model for Learning Node and Graph Representations Jointly

Recently, language representation techniques have achieved great performances in text classification. However, most existing representation models are specifically designed for English materials, which may fail in Chinese because of the huge difference between these two languages. Actually, few existing methods for Chinese text classification process texts at a single level. However, as a special kind of hieroglyphics, radicals of Chi- nese characters are good semantic carriers. In addition, Pinyin codes carry the semantic of tones, and Wubi reflects the stroke structure information, etc. Unfortunately, previous researches neglected to find an effective way to distill the useful parts of these four factors and to fuse them. In our works, we propose a novel model called Moto: Enhancing Embedding with Multiple Joint Factors. Specifically, we design an attention mechanism to distill the useful parts by fusing the four-level information above more effectively. We conduct extensive experiments on four popular tasks. The empirical results show that our Moto achieves SOTA 0.8316 (F1-score, 2.11% improvement) on Chinese news titles, 96.38 (1.24% improvement) on Fudan Corpus and 0.9633 (3.26% improvement) on THUCNews.
