We present a Multi-Features Siamese Tracker (MFST), a novel tracking algorithm exploiting several hierarchical feature maps for robust deep similarity tracking. Since Convolutional layers provide several abstraction levels in characterizing an object, fusing hierarchical features allows to ensure a richer and more efficient representation. Moreover, we handle the target appearance variation by calibrating deep features extracted from two different CNN models. Based on this advanced feature representation, our method achieves high tracking accuracy, while outperforming standard Siamese trackers on object tracking benchmarks.

ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review.

Weakly-supervised object localization is a challenging task in which the object of interest should be localized while learning its appearance. State-of-the-art methods recycle the architecture of a standard CNN by using the activation maps of the last layer for localizing the object. While this approach is simple and works relatively well, object localization relies on different features than classification, thus, a specialized localization mechanism is required during training to improve performance. In this paper, we propose a convolutional, multi-scale spatial localization network that provides accurate localization for the object of interest. Experimental results on CUB-200-2011 and ImageNet datasets show that our proposed approach provides competitive performance for weakly supervised localization.

Convolutional STN for Weakly Supervised Object Localization

Event-based cameras are vision devices that transmit only brightness changes with low latency and ultra-low power consumption. Such characteristics make event-based cameras attractive in the field of localization and object tracking in resource-constrained systems. Since the number of generated events in such cameras is huge, the selection and filtering of the incoming events are beneficial from both increasing the accuracy of the features and reducing the computational load. In this paper, we present an algorithm to detect asynchronous corners from a stream of events in real-time on embedded systems. The algorithm is called the Three Layer Filtering-Harris or TLF-Harris algorithm. The algorithm is based on an events' filtering strategy whose purpose is 1) to increase the accuracy by deliberately eliminating some incoming events, i.e., noise, and 2) to improve the real-time performance of the system, i.e., preserving a constant throughput in terms of input events per second, by discarding unnecessary events with a limited accuracy loss.

Dynamic Resource-aware Corner Detection forBio-inspired Vision Sensors

In recent years, deep learning methods bring incredible progress to the field of object detection. However, in the field of remote sensing image processing, existing methods neglect the relationship between imaging configuration and detection performance, and do not take into account the importance of detection performance feedback for improving image quality. Therefore, detection performance is limited by the passive nature of the conventional object detection framework. In order to solve the above limitations, this paper takes adaptive brightness adjustment and scale adjustment as examples, and proposes an active object detection method based on deep reinforcement learning. The goal of adaptive image attribute learning is to maximize the detection performance. With the help of active object detection and image attribute adjustment strategies, low-quality images can be converted into high-quality images, and the overall performance is improved without retraining the detector.

Adaptive Remote Sensing Image Attribute Learning for Active Object Detection

Predicting which part of a scene elderly people would pay attention to could be useful in assisting their daily activities, such as driving, walking, and searching. Many computational models for predicting focus of attention (FoA) have
been developed. However, most of them focus on mimicking adult FoA and do not work well for predicting elderly’s, due to age-related changes in human vision. Is it possible to leverage the prediction results made by an FoA model of general adults to accurately predict elderly’s FoA, rather than training a new network from scratch? In this paper, we consider a novel problem of translating adult’s FoA to elderly’s and propose an approach based on deep image-to-image translation. Our model is trained by minimizing both Kullback-Leibler divergence and adversarial loss to approximate the joint probability distribution of adult and elderly FoA. Experiments on two datasets demonstrate that our model gives remarkable prediction accuracy.

Translating Adult’s Focus of Attention to Elderly’s

Model efficiency for object detection has become more and more important recently, especially when intelligent mobile devices get more and more popular. Current lightweight object detection model is either migrated from lightweight classification models, or pruned directly from complex object detection models. These pipelines can not match the performance requirements of edge devices. In this work, we propose a neural architecture search (NAS) method to build a detection model automatically that can perform well on edge devices. Specifically, the proposed method supports the search of not only multi-scale feature network, but also backbone network. This enables us to search out a global optimal model. To this end, we've made a special design that the backbone and feature network can share the same search space. This method greatly reduces the search time while ensuring the search accuracy. It can find a good architecture in 14GPU days. Additionally, we add latency information into the main objective during performance estimation. Therefore, we can control between the speed and accuracy to better adapt to the edge environment. Experiments on the PASCAL VOC benchmark indicate that the searched architecture (named NAS-EOD) can get good accuracy even if training from scratch. When using a pre-training scheme, our model is superior to state-of-the-art small object detection models.

NAS-EOD: an end-to-end Neural Architecture Search method 
for Efficient Object Detection

Anticipation of accidents ahead of time in autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles aids in accident avoidance. In order to recognize abnormal events such as traffic accidents in a video sequence, it is important that the network takes into account interactions of objects in a given frame. We propose a novel Feature Aggregation (FA) block that refines each object’s features by computing a weighted sum of the features of all objects in a frame. We use FA block along with Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network to anticipate accidents in the video sequences. We report mean Average Precision (mAP) and Average Time-to-Accident (ATTA) on Street Accident (SA) dataset. Our proposed method achieves the highest score for risk anticipation by predicting accidents 0.32 sec and 0.75 sec earlier compared to the best results with Adaptive Loss and dynamic parameter prediction based methods respectively.

Global Feature Aggregation for Accident Anticipation

Commercially available light field cameras have difficulty in capturing 5D (4D + time) light field videos. They can only capture still light field images or are excessively expensive for normal users to capture the light field video. To tackle this problem, we propose a deep learning-based method for synthesizing a light field video from a monocular video. We propose a new synthetic light field video dataset that renders
photorealistic scenes using Unreal Engine because no light field video dataset is available. The proposed deep learning framework synthesizes the light field video with a full set (99) of sub-aperture images from a normal monocular video. The proposed network consists of three sub-networks, namely, feature extraction, 5D light field video synthesis, and temporal consistency refinement. Experimental results show that our model can successfully synthesize the light field video for synthetic and real scenes and outperforms the previous frame-by-frame method
quantitatively and qualitatively.

5D Light Field Synthesis from a Monocular Video

As a typical cross-modal problem, visual question answering (VQA) has received increasing attention from the communities of computer vision and natural language processing. Reading and reasoning about texts in the images is a burgeoning and important topic in VQA, especially for the visually impaired assistance applications. Given a image, it aims to predict an answer to a provided natural language question closely related to its textual contents. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end textual content based VQA model, which grounds question answering both on the visual and textual information.

Dual Path Multi-modal High-Order Features for Textual Content based Visual Question Answering

Near-duplicate video retrieval (NDVR) is an important and challenging problem due to the increasing amount of videos uploaded to the Internet. In this paper, we propose an attention-based deep metric learning method for NDVR. Our method is based on well-established principles: We leverage two-stream networks to combine RGB and optical flow features, and incorporate an attention module to effectively deal with distractor frames commonly observed in near duplicate videos. We further aggregate the features corresponding to multiple video segments to enhance the discriminative power. The whole system is trained using a deep metric learning objective with a Siamese architecture. Our experiments show that the attention module helps eliminate redundant and noisy frames, while focusing on visually relevant frames for solving NVDR. We evaluate our approach on recent large-scale NDVR datasets, CC_WEB_VIDEO, VCDB, FIVR and SVD. To demonstrate the generalization ability of our approach, we report results in both within- and cross-dataset settings, and show that the proposed method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art approaches.

Attention-Based Deep Metric Learning for Near-Duplicate Video Retrieval

3D object reconstruction from a single-view image is a long-standing challenging problem. Previous work was difficult to accurately reconstruct 3D shapes with a complex topology which has rich details at the edges and corners. Moreover,
previous works used synthetic data to train their network, but domain adaptation problems occurred when tested on real data. In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Multi-branch Information Fusion Network (DmifNet) which can recover a high-fidelity 3D shape of arbitrary topology from a 2D image. Specifically, we design several side branches from the intermediate layers to make the network produce more diverse representations to improve the generalization ability of network. In addition, we utilize DoG (Difference of Gaussians) to extract edge geometry and corners information from input images. Then, we use a separate side branch network to process the extracted data to better capture edge geometry and corners feature information. Finally, we dynamically fuse the information of all branches to gain final predicted probability. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on a large-scale publicly available dataset demonstrate the validity and efficiency of our method.
