With abundant labeled data, deep convolutional neural networks have shown great success in various image recognition tasks. However, these models are often less powerful when applied to novel datasets due to a phenomenon known as domain shift. Unsupervised domain adaptation methods aim to address this problem, allowing deep models trained on the labeled source domain to be used on a different target domain (without labels). In this presentation, we investigate whether the generalization ability of an unsupervised domain adaptation method can be improved through multi-task learning, with learned features required to be both domain invariant and discriminative for multiple different but relevant tasks. Experiments evaluating two fundamental recognition tasks---image recognition and segmentation---show that the generalization ability empowered by multi-task learning may not benefit recognition when the model is directly applied on the target domain, but the multi-task learning setting can boost the performance of state-of-the-art unsupervised domain adaptation methods by a non-negligible margin.

The great event is jointly organized by the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP). 

As in previous years, the program of the conference includes a poster session, tutorials, workshops and demonstrations in addition to the main conference.


We were able to keep the registration fees similar to those charged for the virtual ACL 2020. The one fee allows attendance at the main conference and any/all tutorials and workshops. ICPR 2020 is the premier international conference on Pattern Recognition, gathering leading researchers from around the world to present their latest achievements in Pattern Analysis and Recognition, applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The topic of the year is " Putting Artificial intelligence to work on Patterns". 
For the first time, ICPR has employed a two-round review process similar to journal submissions, with new papers allowed to be submitted in either the first or second round and papers submitted in the first round and not accepted allowed to be revised and re-submitted for second round review. 

In this edition of the **ICPR 2020** Conference, there are 1407 Oral/Poster presentations organized in five Tracks: 
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Pattern Analysis; 
- Biometrics, Human Analysis and Behavior Understanding; Computer Vision, Robotics and Intelligent Systems; 
- Document and Media Analysis; and 
- Image and Signal Processing. 

The **ICPR 2020** Main Conference program also includes 7 Keynotes from prominent world-renowned scientists, 8 Tutorials, 28 Demos, 8 Challenges, 2 Panels, as well as an Industry/Sponsor Exhibition. The diversity of multimedia data in the real-world usually forms multi-view features. How to explore the structure information and correlations among multi-view features is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-view
subspace learning method, named embedding shared low-rank and feature correlation (ESLRFC), for multi-view data analysis. First, in the embedding subspace, we propose a robust low-rank model on each feature set and enforce a shared low-rank constraint to characterize the common structure information of multiple feature data. Second, we develop an enhanced correlation analysis in the embedding subspace for simultaneously removing the redundancy of each feature set and exploring the correlations of multiple feature data. Finally, we incorporate the low-rank model and the correlation analysis into a unified framework. The shared low-rank constraint not only depicts the data distribution consistency among multiple feature data, but also assists robust subspace learning. Experimental results on recognition tasks demonstrate the superior performance and noise robustness of the proposed method.

Embedding shared low-rank and feature correlation for multi-view data analysis


In this paper, we apply ensemble methods from statistical physics to analyse fMRI brain networks for Alzheimer's patients. By mapping the nodes in a network to virtual particles in a thermal system, the microcanonical ensemble and the canonical ensemble are analogous to two different fMRI network representations. These representations are obtained by selecting a threshold on the BOLD time series correlations between nodes in different ways. The microcanonical ensemble corresponds to a set of networks with a fixed fraction of edges, while the canonical ensemble corresponds to the set networks with edges obtained with a fixed value of the threshold. In the former case, there is zero variance in the number of edges in each network, while in the latter case the set of networks have a variance in the number of edges. Ensemble methods describe the macroscopic properties of a network by considering the underlying microscopic characterisations which are in turn closely related to the degree configuration and network entropy. Our treatment allows us to specify new partition functions for fMRI brain networks, and to explore a phase transition in the degree distribution. The resulting method turns out to be an effective tool to identify the most salient anatomical brain regions in Alzheimer's disease and provides a tool to distinguish groups of patients in different stages of the disease.

fMRI Brain Networks as Statistical Mechanical Ensembles

This paper presents a novel method based on the generative adversarial network for radial distortion correction. Instead of generating a corrected image, our generator predicts a pixel flow map to measure the pixel offset between the distorted and corrected image. The quality of the generated pixel flow map and the warped image are judged by the discriminator. As texture far away from the image center has strong distortion, we develop an Adaptive Inverted Foveal layer which can transform the deformation to the intensity of the image to exploit this property. Rotation symmetry enhanced convolution kernels are applied to extract geometric features of different orientations explicitly. These learned features are recalibrated using the Squeeze-and-Excitation block to assign different weights for different directions. Moreover, we construct a first real-world radial distorted image dataset RD600 annotated with ground truth to evaluate our proposed method. We conduct extensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of each part of our framework. The further experiment shows our approach outperforms previous methods in both synthetic and real-world datasets quantitatively and qualitatively.

Position-aware and Symmetry Enhanced GAN for Radial Distortion Correction


A text instance can be easily detected as multiple ones due to the large space between texts/characters, curved shape and partial occlusion. In this paper, a feature embedding based text instance grouping algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. To learn the feature space, a TIEM (Text Instance Embedding Module) is trained to minimize the within instance scatter and maximize the between instance scatter. Similarity between different text instances are measured in the feature space and merged if they meet certain conditions. Experimental results show that our approach can effectively connect text regions that belong to the same text instance. Competitive performance of our approach has been achieved on CTW1500, Total-Text, IC15 and a subset consists of texts selected from the three datasets, with large spacing and occlusions.

Feature Embedding Based Text Instance Grouping for Largely Spaced and Occluded Text Detection

In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based network for stereo matching called DF-Net, which makes three main contributions that are experimentally shown to have practical merit. Firstly, we further increase the accuracy by using the deeply fused spatial pyramid pooling (DF-SPP) module, which can acquire the continuous multi-scale context information in both parallel and cascade manners. Secondly, we introduce channel attention block to dynamically boost the informative features. Finally, we propose a stacked encoder-decoder structure with 3D attention gate for cost regularization. More precisely, the module fuses the coding features to their next encoder-decoder structure under the supervision of attention gate with long-range skip connection, and thus exploit deep and hierarchical context information for disparity prediction. The performance on SceneFlow and KITTI datasets shows that our model is able to generate better results against several state-of-the-art algorithms.

Deeply-fused Attentive Network for Stereo Matching


Image-to-image translation, a task to learn the mapping relation between two different domains, is a rapidgrowing research field in deep learning. Although existing Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based methods have achieved decent results in this field, there are still some limitations in generating high-quality images for practical applications (e.g., data augmentation and image inpainting). In this work, we aim to propose a GAN-based network for data augmentation which can generate translated images with more details and less artifacts. The proposed Detail Fusion Generative Adversarial Network (DFGAN) consists of a detail branch, a transfer branch, a filter module, and a reconstruction module. The detail branch is trained by a super-resolution loss and its intermediate features can be used to introduce more details to the transfer branch by the filter module. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our model generates more satisfactory images against the state-of-the-art approaches for data augmentation.

Detail Fusion GAN: High Quality Translation for Unpaired Images with GAN based Data Augmentation


We propose an efficient method to produce content-sensitive superpixels. Our method produces regular superpixels in relatively homogeneous regions and captures object boundaries in content-dense regions. Compared with the existing content-sensitive superpixel methods, a new adaptive regrowth strategy with an explicit boundary constraint is proposed. The boundary constraint limits the shapes and the sizes of superpixels to ensure semantic consistency. The adaptive regrowth strategy generates more superpixels to capture small objects in content-dense regions. Experiments on the BSDS500 benchmark show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art superpixel methods in terms of content sensitivity and several standard evaluation metrics.

Content-Sensitive Superpixels Based on Adaptive Regrowth

Crossing Aggregation Network (CAggNet) is a novel densely connected semantic segmentation approach for medical image analysis. It improves the idea from deep layer aggregation and makes significant innovations in semantic and spatial information fusion. In CAggNet, the simple skip connection structure of general U-Net is replaced by aggregations of multi-level down-sampling and up-sampling layers, which is a new form of nested skip connection. This aggregation architecture enables the network to fuse both coarse and fine features interactively in semantic segmentation. It also introduces weighted aggregation module to up-sample multi-scale output at the end of the network. We have evaluated and compared our CAggNet with several advanced U-Net based methods in two public medical image datasets, including the 2018 Data Science Bowl nuclei detection dataset and the 2015 MICCAI gland segmentation competition dataset. Experimental results indicate that CAggNet improves medical object recognition and achieves a more accurate and efficient segmentation compared to existing improved U-Net and UNet++ structure.

CAggNet: Crossing Aggregation Network for Medical Image Segmentation


This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)
for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted
to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably
high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability
in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning
strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the
balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find
by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy
loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant
feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications.
Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization,
and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive
experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable
or better than the state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging
Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving
at least 30\% parameters than strong part models.

MixTConv: Mixed Temporal Convolutional Kernels for Efficient Action Recognition

Face recognition is a widely accepted biometric verification tool, as the face contains a lot of information about the identity of a person. In this study, a 2-step neural-based pipeline is presented for matching 3D facial shape to multiple DNA-related properties (sex, age, BMI and genomic background). The first step consists of a triplet loss-based metric learner that compresses facial shape into a lower dimensional embedding while preserving information about the property of interest. Most studies in the field of metric learning have only focused on 2D Euclidean data. In this work, geometric deep learning is employed to learn directly from 3D facial meshes. To this end, spiral convolutions are used along with a novel mesh-sampling scheme that retains uniformly sampled 3D points at different levels of resolution. The second step is a multi-biometric fusion by a fully connected neural network. The network takes an ensemble of embeddings and property labels as input and returns genuine and imposter scores. Since embeddings are accepted as an input, there is no need to train classifiers for the different properties and available data can be used more efficiently. Results obtained by a 10-fold cross-validation for biometric verification show that combining multiple properties leads to stronger biometric systems. Furthermore, the proposed neural-based pipeline outperforms a linear baseline, which consists of principal component analysis, followed by classification with linear support vector machines and a Naïve Bayes-based score-fuser.
